The Fonds de Garantie des Dépôts et de Résolution (FGDR) conducts an annual barometer to measure the French people’s knowledge of the Deposit Guarantee Scheme and the FGDR. It also tracks three indicators of confidence in the banking sector.
This barometric survey follows a consistent methodology over time to ensure the comparability of results.
History of the FGDR Barometer
The first barometer survey was conducted in May 2016 with the general public. In 2017, the FGDR Barometer expanded to include professionals in the banking sector who interact with customers, as well as a sample of opinion leaders.
In 2023, two new themes were introduced:
- Awareness of deposit protection in neobanks;
- The general public’s perception of exposure to online banking fraud and scams.
The 2024 Barometer: 8 Years of Growing Trust in the Banking Sector
Summary of the 9th edition of the Deposit Guarantee Knowledge and FGDR Awareness Barometer (2024)
Confidence in the banking sector continues to grow in 2024:
As in previous years, knowledge of the FGDR helps to raise the level of confidence in the banking sector. The confidence in the banking sector score rose to 82% for those who say they know exactly what the FGDR does (compared to the average score of 72%).
The FGDR’s Awareness and Deposit Guarantee Recognition Remain High
- More than half of the French population (51%) say they are aware of the deposit guarantee mechanism.
- The FGDR remains well identified: 54% of respondents say they know about it.
However, the detailed workings of the guarantee mechanism, such as the individuals protected and the amounts covered, are still largely unknown:
- 23% of the French knows about the €100,000 deposit coverage limit per customer and per bank (-6% vs. 2023).
- The 7-working-day period for compensation by the FGDR is the least known idea (9% of the French).
